So i've just started learning Maxon's Cinema 4D. I actually like it a lot. I haven't really used it much yet, I did my first tutorial today and its just a bunch of random coloured balls floating in air. But with this tutorial, I was introduced to the interface, global illumination, materials, mograph and rendering. I did some colour correction in photoshop after. There is still anti aliasing issues but with time I will get better at it. Here you go for my first C4D render with help from GSG blog.

Hamstead Heath: Kenwood House

So a friend of mine took me to this place in London called Hamstead Heath to visit Kenwood house. I took these photos with my iPhone. Colour graded it though. I took 1 picture of kenwood house but it turned out blur when I captured it on my computer so woops. Apparently this is one of the wealthy areas in London. Famous people such as Hugh Laurie & Sienna Miller have been spotted jogging in this park. Anyways enjoy them pics.

I have had quite an interesting year that have led me to making some life changing decisions. Moving countries, picking up new things to study and of course meeting new people who are from all walks of life. Its been a pleasure so far, new experiences ahead and i'm only looking forward to seeing how life unveils for myself and for those whom I know.

Final Term Project

DFSo the project started out with groups building installations for the bloomsbury festival. During the installation day, individuals were to record and do some drawings of the particular group installation they had received chose at randomly by the tutors. In my previous post, I wrote about the installation that my group mates and I built. We got to draw a group who did something with compost.

This is one of the pics we took for documenting this installation. First time I saw this I was worried on how the hell i'd be drawing sectionals of this installation. I didn't end up drawing proper sectionals, I will go back to drawing them at a later date when I am inspired again and not so sick of looking at this installation.

So started off drawing what was inside this installation, flower bulbs! I thought that it would be a godo way to sink my teeth into the drawings. So i cut open one pocket and drew a sketch out of it. But my tutor told me i needed to go more detailed. So the following images is what I drew.

I tried to draw it as detailed as possible, even the sectionals. I should have used a pencil instead of illustrator though, I reckon the quality of the drawings would have increased tremendously. But I was running out of time and so this was the only option at the time. So then I went on to drawing the bulbs sitting inside these pockets of 10cm by 10 cm of compost.

So after these drawings, we were suppose to make manuals of these drawings for someone else to recreate it. Obviously to interpret it differently, mostly everyone chose to misunderstand them in some way or picked a page from the manual and start of from there, some were given the choice to hybridize it with some object in the british museum. Our group didn't get that so we had to use only the manual that was given which was quite tricky. I had chosen the manual that had an installation that was based on modular construction.

These is the model that I came up for it. Click image for larger view. First I investigated the manual by using different materials then i decided to lasercut MDF wood and make 1 module, defied the brief by stacking it vertically instead of its original horizontal position. Vacuum forma the stack then I covered it with plaster to get the shape. I wanted to cut it in sections but as soon as I cut it into half I felt like it started becoming flat if i were to go into sections of 3cm which was my initial idea, I would have gotten slices of plaster that is about it. Something I have to learn more is how materials work.

Thats it for the term, I have to go redo some of these for my portfolio!

Information Design Brief 2

About 4 weeks ago, I posted an info design work on rent in UK. I was given a second brief of which we had to reiterate 1 or all 99 stories from the book called 'exercises in style'. In a couple of hours I manage to whip up something like this. My first draft looked so much more different to this concept map and it did not make sense so I won't put it up. This map visualises the descriptive text between 5 senses stories. I will continue to work on this for my media studies portfolio that is due at the end of the year. Forgot to mention earlier on that I was particularly inspired by concept maps designed by Mark Lombardi. It would be cool to shape it to a brain or the homunculus...I don't know we'll see.

Introduction to Arduino

I've always had an interest in studying interactivity. Never had the time to, and never knew much about it, but I knew the capacity it has and the different kinds of amazing projects you can do with it. I also knew that it would help me in my field of Architecture. Arduino is a very popular language used more and more now by architects so I decided to get a head start with it. Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy to use hardware and software intended for artists and designers. Check out www.arduino.cc for more information. So i'm also studying a sister language of arduino called processing simultaneously.

Opening up my first Arduino Uno board. I went for a workshop done by Tinker London.

Connecting my board to the computer, learning how to set this up.

To make sure that everything is working, instead of running your first app 'Hello World', I gotta get a a light blinking. So this is pretty much the example code the makers of arduino have kindly provided with.

My light blinks! So basically, I got to know about circuits of by the way i wish i paid more attention in physics class in high school. I also learned how to get a button working, how to fade in and out a light. I will be continuing this workshop in the next session after christmas is over. Can't wait!

Battersea Power Station

As part of our structural engineering seminar, our kind tutors had put together a site visit to the Battersea Power Station today, where we were given a talk about the future of this landmark by the engineers who have been working on this for the past 3 years. It's an incredibly charming building that has been shut for over 20 years now. It will soon be in the centre of a large shopping mall, creative hub, ie exhibition centres, conference halls and residential complexes. Some photos of the interior rooms and exterior.

Since i've been frantically trying to find a place to let, I took average asking prices over 5 years in London of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms. This is a draft, I will keep working on it for the next 2 weeks.

These are some pictures I have taken and for the first time not photoshopped for my media studies photography class. Basically learning how to use the camera. The brief was open but the photos had to be taken during twilight which is sunset. And because there is a small time frame to take these photos, it was really rushed considering we only had 2 weeks to do it and this wasn't the only deadline. There were other projects running simultaneously.

Project number 1 - Volume

First 4 weeks here at the AA, we had a group project, some sort of an introductory project that would let us get to know everyone better. Basically just get down and dirty with materials with a budget of 100 pounds. So were we were all split up into groups of 3 and allocated a topic (sheet, volume and length). The studio became a madhouse after a week or so.

The nice thing about this project is that for the first time they got 1st year architecture students to install their structures for the neighbourhood festival called the bloomsbury festival that occurs annually. So it wasn't just us working on this, there were many other events happening around the area. It was really interesting to see what others got up to.

My group of 3 worked on the trying to add volume to the sidewalk near AA at the intersection of adeline place and bedford avenue since we were only allowed to pick a location 150 metres surrounding AA. Our materials were polystyrene balls. We have in total 1326 balls in total. We weaved them together using fish wire so it would be able to attain characteristics of fabric. We loved the idea that we would take the shape of any object you put it on.

On the installation day, we used it as a drape and called it the drapery of the sidewalk, we initially wanted to create theatrical drapes but because of the short of balls we just hung it on the tree. Why, well we decided that the tree was such a force of nature on the sidewalk. It is strong and its got a dark colour to it. Our balls on the other hand is man made and it is light in weight and it is pure in colour therefore giving contrast to the tree. And because of the height of the tree, we thought that the way the net of balls fall would look elegant and just beautiful.

Because of its very interesting sound and tactile characteristics, it had raving reviews from the public, most of those who crossed paths with our installation, just had to put their hands on it which is what we wanted so that was cool.

Now for the crit, we had to explain future implications of this installation. We made it an analog measuring device for calculating volume and surface area. This was not done to precise calculations, we just showed the process in which it was done to calculate it. So we filled the entire siewalk with polystyrene balls, which created a really interesting picture out of it.

There was the parking inspector going around the area and he stopped while were in the midst of laying our net of balls out on the grid. He was so fond of it he wanted to take a photo with it so here it is.

So then we started putting these balls on objects and here they are. Mainly focusing on the car as it was the easiest object that was big enough to hold it and show the shape of it. Some quick photoshopping involved here of course!

But anyways it was fun working with this material, the opportunities are endless, colleague of mine created a pattern by adding salt on this balls and had this pattern going on the roads. unfortunately I do not have the picture of that particular experiment. By the end of the project i was glad not to be looking at this net of balls anymore. Well I guess that goes for any project that goes on for 4 weeks. You get tired of it naturally.

London & AA

Hey guys, sorry i've been away on several trips since I last updated my blog. I have left Sydney for London for good (well at least the next 5 years for starters). I've decided to study Architecture at the AA (Architectural Association School of Architecture). It's been a week and a half since I arrived and it has been extremely frantic! Looking for a place to stay at the same time working on projects. I'm quite exhausted to be honest!

So look out for any updates as I will be updating some of the work I will be working on from now in this architectural course.

Our first and current studio project is a structure built around the subject of volume. This structure will be installed around AA for the upcoming event called the bloomsbury festival. It is a very challenging piece of work. We are still in the works of designing the structure. We are currently looking and drawing maps of the location we have picked in hopes to find a direct relationship or an abstract relationship it has with the location.

We have chosen to work with polystyrene balls. And there will be more than a thousand of it that we may have to weave together to create a some structure that adds volume to the existing area.

Deadline is in October so look out for process work!

This is a UCAS quick mock up of my favourite space. I used the concept to visualise my imagination. One of my favourite spaces in my head. The microscopes depicts myself observing myself. I am placed on a DJ table because music calms me and helps my creative juices flowing. It is a necessity in my space.

I find it really tough drawing what is infront of me but not what is not there. If that makes any sense. I have been preparing for ucas tasks and this was an exercise I gave myself to pretty much learn perspective, atmospheric colour, shadows, highlights and midtones. There will be more to come.

It's getting there. Now its just touching up details. e-2 used these to show their clients the progress. First two without the giant pendant on the pillar and the other with pendant. Personally, I like the pendant actually. It would definitely add some nice lighting atmosphere at night. But that is not for me to decide. Hehehe.

Toohey's Collaborate

My first job at Klinik was to animate camera moves, render them out in maya and then edit them in FCP. At the time because all the assets were done in 3D, I had no idea, how the creative director would make the 3D frames look exactly like the style frames. So one day after I finished editing all of it. He made me delete all geometry in the scene, only leaving the curves. The scene itself was extremely messy, it took me a few good hours to make sure nothing was hidden and that everything was at its place so the camera moves would be accurate. Because as soon as I removed all geometry in the scene, the curves were all on the plane. I had to move some of them to its geometry position.

So I had written about it below in one of my posts, but I have gotten my hands on the final output recently as it has just been completed. And this is what it looks like. I will show you the previz shots and the final shot together. The creative director was solely responsible in developing this concept and styleguide, unfortunately he is no longer with Klinik and have found some better job elsewhere, which I guess is the normal case. This was done using paint effects if I am not wrong. Here you go anyways.

This scene has become detailed and big to the point it starts taking approximately 40 mins to render a HD720 version. This is the latest version of my render, however, I have loads to learn. I will be learning multipass rendering this weekend and how to set them up in maya 2009 because doing it manually, seemed to be a bit of a hassel.

My AO pass was dark, and I did not manage to render out a reflection pass. Some of the textures like the concrete seems to be washed out with the light, on the inside, where the bookshelf is, it also seems dark...

Will look into mia materials, its apparently powerful. And I will retexture my wood as it looks rather shady.

I will instance my coke cans instead of duplicating them, so it doesn't make my scene heavy and will clean up some of my models. I will have to model them again. Trying to keep the scene as light as possible.

So loads to do this weekend! Hope it turns out well. It will definitely help having a powerful computer.... I hope to purchase one soon.

Arch Visualisation 2

Today, I studied lighting, final gathering and more texturing. I have to add a lot of details to this one soon, but with the help of a mate, he advised to get the lighting done first. I have to rearrange the furniture and texture them. I have to add plants, cakes, jug of water somewhere on the tables and I think I may need to work on the scale of the furnitures too. So loads to do... the weekends have been extremely productive. Though I have not had the chance to sleep in yet. I will soon! Hopefully this project will be done by the end of next week and soon I will be able to explore other projects. I am finding myself interested in environment sets and matte paintings. I will be heading deeper into this. Anyhoo check out the blog for more progress through the coming week.

Oh and I forgot, the final product, will definitely be comped with all the different passes. Tried keylight and hard shadows pass today. It looks bloody amazing. Shadows make such a different. The image above doesnt really show shadows as it is just a beauty pass. So some of the passes I will be exploring

I have been blessed in getting my first arch vis job with a respectable and reputable studio; E2 in Sydney Australia. So what was the brief. Firstly, they wanted me to transform a CAD perspective into a sleek looking visualisation. I had NO IDEA whatsoever on how to texture and light models properly. So this job really allowed me to explore these areas in Maya 2009.

This is what they provided me with. Which was not much to go by really. However there has been a lot of progress.

This is after feedback on the first render. They changed some designs and wanted to add in some stuff like a coffee machine, so on so forth. They changed the style of the chairs and some colours here and there. So as we can see, the design is also changing as I progress along with them. This is the kind of progression they have with their clients as well, as they aren't completely locked off on the designs either of this space.

Modelling Basics

One of my aims this year is to go back to learning and refreshing my memory with basic modelling techniques used in Maya. I will be going through tutorials and hopefully be skilled at modelling clean topology. I have to say, there are so many techniques out there and there is more than 1 way to do something. Of course with experience, one will find the quickest and most efficient way of modelling.

Digital Tutors has a tutorial called 'Introduction to Modelling' where it takes you through using different techniques in modelling a swiss army knife. Back in college, I was taught Polygon and Nurb modelling, but Sub D's will definitely make your life easier too. So this is something I have learnt, together with using the boolean tool, animation snap shot tool. But mostly learning how to keep your geometry clean. Creating smooth curves and hard edges. The 'insert edge loop tool' and the 'split polygon tool' is now my bestfriend.

So I modelling this swiss army knife step by step by watching this tutorial. And here is my render output. I wasn't focusing on the textures as you can see. That will be something I will be looking into the near future.

Movie Poster

I designed a movie poster for a client. A movie called Peekaboo. Directed by Damien Power and produced by Joe Weatherstone.

This is the final output. Played with the type and thought this scribbly type fit the personality of the movie the best.

I also did a bookmark flyer version of the poster. This is how it looks.

This was my one of the other designs that got ruled out... Hehehe I thought it was nice, but I guess decorative type trumped serif over here! So in this version you see a superimporsed doll element underneath the girl. Though the client loved it and well I was only experimenting to see really see what kind of direction the client was looking at. Anyways though they loved it, it could send out the wrong message about the kind of movie it may be about. We don't want people thinking it is a horror flick of course. I personally liked it without the doll and thankfully, they decided to agree. Relieved. I looked at this for 2 days...I even dreamt of this girl. Bizzare dream I tells ya!

Changing concept design

So I had been working on a concept previously for Klinik for a show I am not suppose to mention. So the client had decided to change the name of the show, which kind of changes the concept altogether. So for a day and a half, I worked on this concept. Sorry I can't reveal the title of the show at this point in time. But hopefully we win the pitch, and once it airs, I can reveal the name. It would be interesting to work on it as it consist of a bit of stop motion animation. Boss was happy and I was glad!

It was my first girly job, it was a little challenging as I am not a typical how can i put it, wearing heels kind of girl. New Year, New Work!

So I've been working for Klinik on some design stuff. More so branding for a new upcoming show I am not allowed to mention. Have been developing some concepts for them. These are some. I had to remove the title artwork for it from these style frames as it is so they say 'highly confidential' on my brief. Here's some work. The concept has got to do with kids and adult topics being interpreted by both adult and kids.

Fantasy like stories more so imagination.

Middle of the frame is empty as the title of the show goes there, had to take that down. Anyways so we'll be working on some stuff through the week, I hope to post more stuff up. This will all be animated hopefully as a 7 to 10 second title sequence piece.

I am extremely happy that this year has come to an end, not because I am over it, because I feel like I have accomplished yet another milestone in my life. For the past 3 and a half years, I have learnt so much in terms of technology with a bunch of very dedicated geeks. In the coming year, I'm extremely excited to see where the wind blows me to in terms of studies. My daily dilemma, will come to an end soon enough...I should just toss a coin hehehe. Not so easy though! My new year resolutions, is to get fit, to post more updates on my blog, to learn, just learn and absorb in as much knowledge as I possibly can through anything or anyone.

New Editing Job

So this is my latest job, after creating a 60 second studio reel for E-2, i'll be editing some 3D footage for Klinik. I'll be animating camera moves and then rendering out sequences. After this i'll be editing them in final cut pro. Hope it all goes well. Busy busy busy!

Sub-Atomic

Hey all, so I just finished designing a magazine cover. To be put into my new portfolio. Had this vision in my head and been playing with the idea for a bit. I used Realflow to create the liquid simulation and then imported it into Maya. Just turning down the ambient texture on my lambert and gave it a wireframe render. There was this motion clip I saw ages ago, where this guy animated wireframe liquid simulation but his metaball hes created was in softimage XSI or houdini because the vertices of the object kept moving according to depth of field, it was a fantastic effect. I have been learning it, however this where I am to so far. I am fairly warm i reckon, I just have to keep going. Find out how it's done in Maya! Only problem I have to solve is when I import my bin files from realflow to maya, my object is triangulated. Hmmm...anyways here it is.

Re: Meeting Myself, My Bookshelf

So a mate of mine has a brother who wrote about his bookshelf. He thought it was a good way for a stranger to get to know him through the kind of books he read. My mate did it too and spread the word around, so here's my bookshelf. I'd say there's more textbooks per say, the "how to's and what is books" quite some combination...hehehe. Let me know what you think of it. I have a magazine collection, huge fan of IDN and wired magazine (thanks parag). I have some TIME and New Scientist mags as well, in my other shelf, in my closet, full of junk I need to clean, and by my bedside, because its the book i'm reading at the moment, Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. PS: I think Imran Khan is not only intelligent but hehe hubba hubba.

Title Sequence

Alright, so I have finally managed to get the first draft of my title sequence out. These are some of the screenshots taken from it. The video can be viewed at http://www.zeitgeber.com/title_sequence.html.

Just a brief description about the sequence itself. I found this run down industrial building in Concord, Sydney. I fell in love with the look and everything inside it. The rustic texture of the metal, coincidentally i had bought jeff dodson's music, the onesize symphony album and once I heard one of its track, Merveilleux Pommes, I saw the entire piece in my head, quick cuts with type and film colour enburns transitions.

This place had a carpet of birdshit hehehe and I actually went to film it with my friend, she was highly patient with me, but was disgusted with the shit she tried not to step on it but gave up since it was everywhere. I have to thank her! Thanks Chil! Besides the shit, the shot with the birds flying, that was by luck! I waited for a bit and somemore and yeah I guess it paid off.

Experimental Poster Design

So I woke up today with the urge of creating some poster designs. I decided to create one that looks electronic and has that whole sound vision vibe. I made up the date by the way, this conference is purely fictional. I used Real Flow to create the 3D liquid shape and then i imported it into Maya where I i added texture and light. Took it into After Effects to give it some lens flare, yes I am aware that I can also do this is Photoshop, but hehe I find it easier using After effects creating this look. It was pretty quick too. So thanks to some motion blur, it looks like a motion piece only its a still frame. Photoshopped text and wala... I have a few ideas coming through...different styles perhaps.

The third one in particular, I got this effect by enabling contour rendering as well as switching on the beautiful contour shading attribute from the plugin (multi tool) ticket 101. And now that I have, its ok to go a little crazy with it for a while I guess. For fun of course.

Digging up old work

So I have been decluttering my hard disks and going through all work and projects, some of which I have deleted. I came across theses posters I created for a campaign for a university project called pro|gene. I had to photograph the baby and I was fortunate I got him in that position playing the guitar left handed too! I did not put this into my digital portfolio so I thought I'd add this here.

Davenport Biggest Undies Twister Event @ Bondi Beach | 5th September 2009

This was my first big print job @ MTV. The Davenport's Biggest Undie Twister! The event was held @ Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. I designed the spinner board for Davenport, with some direction of course. The leg with the rollerskate on, hands and socks, all moi. It was a straight forward brief though. On top of that, I created the twister mat these guys are sitting/standing/squating on as well!

A little funny comment to make about that mat, when I was in the middle of doing it, my boss send me an email saying davenport wanted the same number of davenport logo's as MTV logos on all those dots! So there was a bit of math involved in the creation of that mat! Hehehe. I was seeing dots by the end of that day. But looking at this event, it was worth it.

What I learnt from this brief. Designing for large print! I never knew that if you want to print something this huge, the process was to create the document at 10% the size and then scale it up. Of course EPS format, now i know why people love you! Also I never knew what a die cut was till this brief. So learn something knew everyday!

So this is just a digital journal of my own. After sorting out my visa issues, I am now prepared to go back to basics and learn some applications whilst working on some personal projects of my own. I am excited. But before I do that, I need to update and change the layout of my current website as I am unsatisfied with it. It was done in a rush and now that I have the time I will fix that first.

Just to add, I will be focusing on 3D and Motion pieces, and perhaps some typography print work. I will be using applications such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design and Real Flow.

Some of the things I would like to delve into, character development, character animation, matte painting, film set environment, film, story telling, music videos so on and so forth. Your comments and criticism is more than welcome. So stay tuned!
